PORTLAND – Portland State freshman right-hander Anna Bertrand and Idaho State freshman shortstop Taylor Marchione each shared or won two top individual awards as the Pacific Coast Softball Conference announced the 2010 All-Mountain Division Team Tuesday. Bertrand and Marchione shared the Mountain Division Freshman of the Year Award. Bertrand was also an unanimous choice for Mountain Division Pitcher of the Year, while Marchione shared Player of the Year honors with Portland State senior catcher Brandi Scoggins.

Viking second-year head coach Tobin Echo-Hawk was named the Mountain Division Coach of the Year after leading Portland State to the inaugural Mountain Division title. All total, Portland State placed eight players on the All-Mountain Division squad, including five first-team selections.

In addition to Bertrand earning first team pitcher, junior right-hander Nichole Latham also earned first team honors. Scoggins was named first team catcher, while senior second baseman Becca Diede and sophomore utility player Lacey Holm also earned first team honors for the Vikings.

Bertrand went 16-10 with a 1.61 ERA and recorded 218 strikeouts in 31 appearances, including 24 starts. She led the PCSC in ERA, strikeouts and batting-average-against (.195) and ranked second in wins. The 218 strikeouts is a Portland State single-season record and ranks sixth on the conference’s single-season list. In PCSC play, Bertrand went 8-2 with a 0.88 ERA.

Marchione led the PCSC with a .424 batting average to rank second on the conference’s season list. Former Sacramento State player Lindy Winkler batted .434 in 2006. Marchione also tied for the team lead with four home runs and led the Bengals with 31 RBI.

Scoggins led the Vikings with a .367 average. She also had one home run, 21 RBI and 15 doubles. She tied for third in the PCSC in doubles and her 44 career doubles established a new school career record. Scoggins also finished her career ranked second on the PCSC career doubles list, two shy of the conference record of 46 set by Santa Clara’s Jenna Brown (2003-06).

Echo-Hawk is 59-53 in her two seasons at the helm of Portland State, including 33-7 in PCSC play. She guided Portland State to the PCSC title in 2009 and to the PCSC Championship Series in 2010. The Vikings claimed the Mountain Division with an 18-2 conference mark, tying the 2007 Loyola Marymount squad for the most conference wins in a season. Portland State’s bid to become the first PCSC team to repeat as champions fell a game short, falling two games-to-one to Saint Mary’s in the PCSC Championship Series.

The Mountain Division was voted on by the six head coaches in the PCSC Mountain Division. This is the first year the PCSC has announced an All-Coastal and All-Mountain Division team, as the conference expanded to 12 members and conducted divisional play for the first time in 2010.

The All-Coastal Division team was announced Monday.

Idaho State, Northern Colorado, Portland State, Seattle, Utah Valley and Weber State comprise the Mountain Division. CSU Bakersfield, Loyola Marymount, Sacramento State, Saint Mary’s, Santa Clara and San Diego form the Coastal Division.
