LIONS, HORNETS ENTER FINAL DAY OF PCSC SEASON TIED FOR FIRST

Loyola Marymount and Sacramento State will enter the final day of the Pacific Coast Softball Conference schedule tied for first place with 12-6 PCSC records, after recording doubleheader sweeps Saturday. Both the Lions and the Hornets entered the day one-game behind first-place Saint Mary's. However, Loyola Marymount took a pair of games from the Gaels, winning 6-1 and 5-3, while Sacramento State swept San Diego, on the road, 12-1 in five innings and 6-3.

The Lions, though, will control their own fate entering Sunday. Loyola Marymount will claim earn the PCSC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with a second straight sweep of Saint Mary's. The Lions would also hold the tiebreaker in a three-way tie, along with Sacramento State and Portland State, by virtue of having the best combined record against the Hornets and Vikings. Loyola Marymount went a combined 6-2 against the Hornets and Vikings, while the Vikings were 3-5 against the Lions and Hornets, and Sacramento State was 3-5 against the Lions and Vikings.

Sacramento State can claim its first PCSC championship with a sweep of San Diego and one Loyola Marymount loss to Saint Mary's, or with one win against the Toreros and a pair of losses by the Lions to the Gaels. Sacramento State won 3-of-4 from Saint Mary's this season, and also holds the tiebreaker in a three-way tie with Saint Mary's and Portland State, going 6-2 against the Gaels and Vikings.

Both Saint Mary's and Portland State remain alive to claim the PCSC's automatic bid. The Gaels must win both games Sunday against Loyola Marymount, while Sacramento State must lose twice to San Diego and the Vikings once at Santa Clara. The Vikings need to win both games of Sunday's twinbill against Santa Clara and have Saint Mary's and San Diego both win twice.  That would result in a 13-7 tie between Portland State and Saint Mary's, with the Vikings holding the tiebreaker due to outscoring the Gaels 12-9 in their four-game series in Portland, April 19-20.

All three Sunday PCSC doubleheaders begin at noon, with Portland State at Santa Clara, Sacramento State at San Diego and Loyola Marymount at Saint Mary's.
