Friday, May 9, 2008

PORTLAND – The Pacific Coast Softball Conference announced its 2008 individual award winners Friday, with Loyola Marymount senior right-hander Tiffany Pagano capping her career with a third PCSC Pitcher of the Year Award. Sacramento State head coach Kathy Strahan was named the PCSC Coach of the Year, while Hornets’ junior catcher Jamie Schloredt was a unanimous choice for the Player of the Year. Portland State freshman shortstop Arielle Wiser was named the PCSC Freshman of the Year.

The awards were voted on by the PCSC’s six head coaches, and were not allowed to vote for their own players. The 2008 All-PCSC team will be announced later.

Pagano, from Temecula, Calif., led the PCSC this season in ERA, wins, strikeouts and innings pitched, going 23-11 with a 1.45 ERA and 274 strikeouts over 241 2/3 innings. She finished her career with a record of 72-43 with a 1.85 ERA, and holds six Loyola Marymount career records. In addition to setting school career marks for wins, she also school career records for games started (119), complete games (87), shutouts (34), innings pitched (778.1) and strikeouts (820).

Pagano also won PCSC Pitcher of the Year as a freshman in 2005 and last season as a junior.

Strahan led Sacramento State to its first-ever PCSC title in 2008, as the Hornets went 14-6 in conference play. The Hornets will carry a 32-19 record into next week’s NCAA Regionals. The 32 victories marks Sacramento State’s ninth 30-win season under Strahan, and the fifth in the last six seasons. Strahan earned her 700th career victory during the Hornets’ 6-3 victory over San Diego in game two of last weekend’s series.

Strahan is 703-659-3 in her 25th season as a collegiate head coach, and 456-414-2 in her 16th season with the Hornets.

Schloredt, from Woodland, Calif., had one of the most productive seasons in Sacramento State history. Schloredt will enter the NCAA Regionals having started all 51 games this season, and recording a PCSC-leading .412 batting average. She also led the conference with 12 HRs and is third in RBI with 39. Schloredt also has recorded a .750 slugging percentage and a .514 on-base average, which currently leads the PCSC.

Schloredt will also enter the NCAA Regionals with a career-best 10-game hitting streak, batting .500, going 16-for-32, with three home runs and eight RBI during the streak.

Wiser, from Battle Ground, Wash., is the second straight Viking to win PCSC Freshman of the Year. Current Portland State sophomore Brandi Scoggins shared the award last season with Loyola Marymount’s Melissa Dykema and San Diego’s Jennifer Ellenbeck.

Wiser appeared in all 58 games for the Vikings, making 57 starts at shortstop. She batted .327 with one home run and 21 RBI. Wiser also set a Portland State season record with 22 sacrifice bunts to lead the PCSC. She recorded a .964 fielding percentage, having been charged with eight errors in 220 fielding chances.
